Week #1 - Sunday, April 25th: season opener
MVP Sports bests Durty Jakes Pirates
Adult baseball is alive and well in West Hawaii as our local league has grown to
seven teams this year, sporting new uniforms and touting several new sponsors. While
the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide drew a bye in the opening round of play, the MVP
Sports (2002 season champions) opened the 2004 season by defeating the Durty Jakes
Pirates by the score of 10-7 Sunday morning in a game that was played well by both sides.
MVP Sports featured their ace
Ikaika Baptista
(the former U.H. Manoa hurler) who
picked up the win, while
Tim O’Connell
earned the save.
Benny Alcorn
led the
offensive attack. For the Durty Jakes Pirates, new-to-the-league
Eduardo Andrews
pitched a stellar performance, only to fall short in the end. Veterans
Gerardo Ibarra
and
Oscar Delgado
provided the offensive 1-2 punch for the Pirates, but it just was
not enough against MVP Sports.
Active Steel puts the rivets to Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys
In the noon contest, Active Steel (runners-up in 2003) had to come from behind
to claim a 6-4 victory from the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys.
Donald Goings
scored twice to set the pace for the Steelers. The
Chatfield
brothers (Paxton
and
Butch),
standouts on the Kealakehe High School team, shared the pitching duties, with the elder brother
Butch
notching the win. For the Canardlys,
J.R. Mori
led the scoring and went the distance
on the mound, only to suffer a heartbreaking loss.
Michaelangelos Mariners struggle but outlast Play-It-Again Drysdales
In the 3:00 P.M. game, the Michaelangelos Mariners (reigning 2003 KonaBaseball.com league champs)
continued their winning ways, this time by the score of 9-5 at the expense of the
Drysdales who dropped an early lead, then fell short in a last-inning rally.
Joel Zwak
(voted most valuable player in the KonaBaseball.com league last year)
started a bit shaky, and it looked as though the strong pitching of
Chris "Hardly-a-Mistake" Drake
might spell an early-season upset for the Drysdales. However, as
the game progressed,
Zwak
settled down, and
Drake
ran out of gas. Both bullpens
had difficulty in the afternoon sun, causing a tightening of the contest in the
late innings. At game’s end, the Play-It-Again Drysdales loaded the bases, but could not cash
in when the Mariners called upon
John Corbin
to come in to retire the last three
batters and secure the save.

Week #2 - Sunday, May 2nd: Steelers grab first place
Canardlys can almost ... as usual
The Play-It-Again Drysdales'
Tyler Roy
led off the 9:00 A.M. game Sunday morning, May 2nd, with a solid single,
promptly stole second base, then
scored on
Russ (his father)
Roy's
base hit, to give the men clad in the dodger-blue shirts an early lead against
the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys. The Canardlys answered back with three
runs of their own in the third inning
and began to SMELL a victory.
Shadow Diessner
kept the Drysdales' batters in check through five innings, and the Canardlys began to TASTE
a victory. However, in the end, the men of
Mountain Thunder were forced to SWALLOW a defeat. Behind reliever
J.R. Mori
(the hard-luck pitcher of the KonaBaseball.com league), the Canardly's fielding defense broke down,
allowing the Drysdales to score three unearned runs. Their rally was capped by a
home run smacked by
Tyler Roy,
which hoisted the Play-It-Again Drysdales to a 4-3 triumph.
Chris "Hardly-a-Mistake" Drake
earned the pitching victory.
Pirates make the Mariners walk the plank
With the Durty Jakes Pirates' sponsor
Rich Cannady
(KonaBaseball.com's version of New York Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner)
chomping on a stogie in the noon day crowd,
his jolly rogers were ready, willing and able to challenge last
season's championship team, the Michaelangelos Mariners.
Pitcher
Jorge Perez
went the distance for the Pirates, yielding only one run to the Mariners' fleet-footed
Michael Keawe,
who came around to score after doubling to lead off the third inning.
Matt Collier
suffered the loss for the Mariners, the final score: 4-1.
Steelers hammer Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide
Active Steel grabbed top spot on the ladder with an old-fashioned shellacking
of the Crimson Tide, 14-1.
Alson Kajikawa,
Dana Myers (Kealakehe high school
teacher and member of the Waveriders' baseball team coaching staff),
Kai Miller,
and
John Marshall
led the offensive charge for the Steelers, while
league-leading youth pitcher
Paxton Chatfield
cruised to victory.
It was a rude welcoming for the Tide's new co-manager
Eric Simbeck
(formerly of the Michaelangelos Mariners) who, along with
John Vaughan,
looks to turn things around for the Bubba Gumps team in 2004.
Atlee Riddle,
in his pitching debut, suffered the defeat.

Week #3 - Sunday, May 16th: Active Steel takes command of first place
Steelers send the Mariners a curve
The Active Steel Steelers faced the Michaelangelos Mariners for the first time since last
October's championship game, a game in which the Mariners dominated. However, May 9th, 2004
was a different day in a different season, a season that is looking increasingly good for the
welding crew.
Alson Kajikawa
batted 2-for-4, scored twice, and paced the Steelers offensively to a 6-1 victory. Defensively,
Active Steel's infield turned several double-plays, eliminating any threats by the Mariners. But
the real story of the Sunday morning contest was the pitching debut of
Sky Valenzuela
who kept the mighty Mariners in check all day, including striking out the side in the
third inning. The former Konawaena High School student, now at Kealakehe High School,
yielded only three hits Sunday, and looks to be a real threat next year in BIIF league
action. In the mean time, he is
making everyone in the KonaBaseball.com adult league take notice and wonder if he's
really Fernando Valenzuela.
The Michaelangelos Mariners, reigning KBdc champions, are reeling somewhat in season 2004 and have now dropped two
consecutive games.
Aaron Shapiro's
double and solo score provided just about the only highlights for the Mariners as
Joel Zwak
suffered the loss.
Bubba Gumps' Crimson Tide KO's MVP Sports
In the noon game, MVP Sports' pitcher
Tim O'Connell
struck out 11 in a strong performance, but the boys of Bubba Gumps
kept cool and knew that they had the game in the books, 7-0.
Being Mother's Day, several key MVP Sports players were not in attendance. This
resulted in a forfeit by those "mamas' boys".
Pirates shiver the Canardlys' timbers
The Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys started strong in the 3:00 P.M. game
against the Durty Jakes Pirates,
but the pitchers' duel would not last beyond three innings.
The Canardlys' fastballer
J.R. Mori
and the Pirates' finesse pitcher
Gerardo Ibarra,
both had outstanding performances. The difference in the game was that, after
crisp Canardlys' defense (including the execution of a key double-play to
get out of the third inning) in the first half of the game, fielding
and throwing errors plagued them in later innings.
Seeing the game slipping away, Mountain Thunder coach
Randy Hill
decided to try several untested pitchers and wannabe pitchers,
none of whom could find the strike zone. The Pirates
proceeded to take advantage of the situation.
In the end, the final score of 13-0 was worse than what was
deserving, but, then again, nobody was about to get hits off of the
Durty Jakes' battery (hurler
Gerardo Ibarra
and veteran signal-calling catcher
Dennis Cintas)
on this afternoon.
KonaBaseball.com player turns pro
Former Active Steel pitcher
John Fagan
(5 wins and 2 losses in the 2003 KBdc season) was selected in the first round of the Frontier Baseball
League draft held last week. He was the 5th player taken overall and has signed to play for
the River City Rascals in 2004 (a team domiciled in the St. Louis, Missouri, area). For more
information, log on to
www.frontierleague.com. The KonaBaseball.com league congratulates
John on his achievement and wishes him
great success in his baseball career.

Week #4 - Sunday, May 16th: rain? ... in Kona???
Games rained out
Rarely do KonaBaseball.com games get washed out, but this Sunday proved to be the
exception to the rule. The heavens opened up Saturday night through Sunday
morning, forcing the cancellation of the morning game, and the field was too wet
for the noon game as well. Accordingly, the MVP Sports vs. Drysdales game has
been rescheduled for noon on June 6th (week #7) and the clash between the Crimson
Tide and the Cannardlys has been set to be played at noon on June 27th (week #10).

Week #5 - Sunday, May 23rd: Active Steel refuses to lose
Pirates take the Tide to the high seas
The Durty Jakes Pirates continued their winning streak Sunday morning, dominating
their game against the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide. Shortstop
Mike Luster
scored the first run of the game to raise the Tides' hopes for an upset, but the rest of the
contest was somewhat "lackluster" for Bubba Gumps.
In the home half of the first inning, the Pirates batted around, plating six runs,
then never looked back, eventually running out winners by the score of 14-1. Durty Jakes'
former professional player
Leo Perez
led the Pirates both offensively and
defensively, pitching a 3-hitter, batting 2 for 3, and scoring three times in a one-sided
slugfest.
Steelers come from behind to best Play-It-Again Drysdales
In the noon game, the Play-It-Again Drysdales took the game right up to their
more-favored opponents. Saddleback College (California) hurler
Morgan Kruger-Burgess,
back home for the summer here in Kona, was once again on the mound for the Drysdales, leading
his team to a one-run edge over the Steelers until their final, regularly scheduled, at-bat.
However, playing "small ball", Active Steel managed to squeeze the tying run across the plate, sending the game
into extra innings.
In overtime, Steelers' pitcher
Paxton Chatfield
came on in relief
to notch the victory when his teammates rallied for four runs in their final offensive charge. In
a last gasp, the
Drysdales answered back with two runs of their own, but it was too little, too late. In the end, the
Steelers remained undefeated in 2004, this time by the final score of 7-5.
The game was the swan song for
Butch Chatfield
of the Steelers (and graduating Kealakehe High School star catcher) who is off
to begin basic training pursuant to his enlistment in the United States Marines.
MVP Sports crushes Michaelangelos Mariners
In the late game Sunday afternoon, behind the awesome pitching of
Ikaika Baptista
(who tossed a one-hitter), the MVP Sports team
literally teed off on the Mariners.
The Michaelangelos Mariners, operating without their star pitcher and last season's
most valuable player in the league
Joel Zwak,
could not consistently find the strike zone. When the Michaelangelo's
pitchers actually were successful in putting the ball over the plate, the MVP Sports' sluggers
had all the answers in a game that looked like batting practice for the
victors. In a "laugher" (although not particularly funny to the Mariners), the
MVP Sports of Waimea put on a batting clinic at the expense of last year's champs, 15-2.

Week #6 - Sunday, May 30th: Memorial Day weekend - now just a memory
Play-It-Again Drysdales double-up on Crimson Tide, 6-3
Wayne Craft
pitched a strong game for the Bubba Gumps
Crimson Tide and led all batters with a single, a double and a triple,
but it was not enough to overcome a spirited Drysdales team in the 9:00 A.M.
game Sunday morning.
Behind the steady performance of
Chris "Hardly-a-Mistake" Drake,
the Play-it-Again Drysdales kept their noses in front of their opponents
all game and were sparked by the offensive punch provided by
Gabe Aispuro
and
Morgan Kruger-Burgess
(who also came on in relief to record the save).
Canardlys give Mariners a scare, but fall short, 10-7
Despite a valiant pitching effort by
Shadow Diessner
of the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys, his team's last inning
rally could not overcome the Mariners' early-game lead in the noon contest.
Being a holiday weekend, the Michaelangeos Mariners had trouble fielding a team.
Nevertheless, the skeleton squad pulled together to notch a victory thanks to
multiple scoring by
Gabe Harris,
Matt Collier,
and
Guy Newbury. The pitching honors went to
starter
Aaron Shapiro,
with the save being earned by
Matt Collier.

Week #7 - Sunday, June 6th: Pirates and Steelers tied for first place - is this Pittsburgh?
Canardlys give MVP Sports almost more than they can handle
Facing a double-header Sunday, the MVP Sports jumped out to an early lead
in the 9:00 A.M. game by scoring three runs in the first inning against an always-hopeful
Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys team. The underdog Canardlys then settled down and kept up with
their powerful opponents throughout the rest of the innings. However, in typical Canardlys' fashion,
the better the opponent, the better they play, but they always seem to end up on the short end of
the stick, this time by the score of 7-4.
MVP Sports'
Tim O'Connell
(the high school pitching coach of Hawaii Preparatory Academy's B.I.I.F. team)
registered the victory on the mound while
Keegan Lerma recorded the save,
snuffing out a late-inning rally by Mountain Thunder's
Nate Ching,
Andrew Emsley,
Ryan Landis, and
Chris Kauwe.
Play-It-Again Drysdales topple MVP Sports, 5-2
In a makeup game (previously rained out), the Play-It-Again Drysdales
enjoyed their second chance, putting together a
close-to-flawless performance against MVP Sports, the KonaBaseball.com's team from South Kohala.
The Drysdale's quiet achiever
Gabe Aispuro
batted 3 for 3 and scored twice to lead his team offensively and help secure
the pitching victory for
Morgan Kruger-Burgess. The highlight of
the game was when
"Hammerin" Cameron Smay
stole second base, then came around to score the go-ahead run for the Drysdales, who,
from that point forward, never looked back.
It was the first time in KonaBaseball.com league history that any team defeated MVP Sports'
pitcher
Ikaika Baptista,
the former ace for the University of Hawaii (Manoa) team.
Pirates outlast Steelers in a thriller, 5-4
The 3:00 contest turned out to be the game of the day with the top spot on the
KonaBaseball.com ladder up for grabs. Previously undefeated Active Steel finally met its match
in the name of the Durty Jakes Pirates. All tallied, the final score was Pirates-5, Steelers-4 in
a game that sounds like it was played in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, not Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Former professional pitcher
Eduardo Andrews
was outstanding for Durty Jakes, going the distance and securing the victory. His
vast array of pitches, especially his edge-of-the-strike-zone curve and
almost-unhittable slider proved to be the difference in the game.
For Active Steel, it was the first loss
suffered by fast-baller
Paxton Chatfield
(the star hurler on the Kealakehe High School team), who also pitched very well. What a game to watch!

Week #8 - Sunday, June 13th: Durty Jakes grabs top spot on the ladder
Pirates take the treasure chest from the Drysdales
The Durty Jakes Pirates had to come from behind to beat the Play-It-Again Drysdales, 9-2, in
the 9:00 A.M. game Sunday morning. The Pirates' offense was sparked by
Jesse Guzman
and
Ibarra
brothers
(Jose Luis
and
Gerardo).
Former professional player
Leo Perez
was the winning pitcher while
Chris "Hardly-A-Mistake" Drake
took the loss for the Drysdales.
Mariners face the Crimson Tide at high noon in a battle of the seas
In the noon game, it looked as though the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide was going to celebrate
its second win of the season at the expense of the Michaelangelos Mariners.
But the game of baseball is not over until the last man is out, and the Mariners
reminded everyone in the KonaBaseball.com league of that truth.
Down to their last out in their final at-bat, the Mariners refused to
allow themselves to be washed out with the tide and by the Tide.
Mariners' ace
Joel Zwak,
back in the lineup after several weeks on the mainland, notched the victory.
New-to-the-league pitcher
Garrett Gresham
suffered the agonizing defeat for the Crimson Tide, who were, in the end,
drowned by the final tally of 6-5 when
Brian Campbell
scored the winning run for the Mariners.
MVP Sports turns the torch around to cut the Steelers out of first place
League-leading Active Steel tenaciously held off the
MVP Sports through three scoreless innings Sunday afternoon, both squads
knowing that the Pirates had already prevailed in their contest earlier in the day.
Ikaika Baptista
of the MVP Sports was back in form, recording the win with the help of
Tim O'Connell,
who picked up the save for the Waimea team.
On the other side of the ledger,
Sky Valenzuela
suffered his first defeat in the 2004 season. The fifth inning turned out to be the
Nemisis for Active Steel when MVP Sports plated four South Kohalans, then went on to win by the
final result of 8-2 in a game that was closer than the score indicated.

Week #9 - Sunday, June 20th: On Father's Day, Canardlys Can
Steelers weld the door shut on Bubba Gumps
In a brief stopover on the Big Island before reporting for duty in the U.S. Marines,
Butch Chatfield
joined
Neil McKay
in pacing Active Steel to a 9-1 hammering of the
Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide in the Sunday morning
KonaBaseball.com game. The offensive barrage secured another pitching victory for
Sky Valenzuela
of the Steelers who struck out ten batters, while
Wayne Craft
took his second loss of the season for the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide.
Pirates hoist their sails over the Mariners, 5-3
In the noon game,
Jose Luis Ibarra
played a game worthy of a king's ransom, batting 2-for-3 and scoring
three times to pace his Durty Jakes Pirates to
the discovery of the treasure chest, captured from the
hands of the Michaelangelos Mariners.
The game, well-played by both teams, was close throughout the contest,
providing the Father's Day crowd with a boatload full of entertainment.
Last year's most valuable player of the KonaBaseball.com league
Joel "Seldom-Gives-A-Walk" Zwak
pitched well for the Mariners, but not
quite up to the performance put on by
Leo Perez
of the Pirates who fanned every batter in the Michaelangelos
lineup except for
Jeff Bailey,
historically one of the hardest players to strike out in the entire league.
The difference in the 5-3 game was the outstanding infield play of the cohesive Durty Jakes
Pirates squad, especially by third baseman
Adrian Villanueva
whose key plays secured the Pirates' dominance atop the KonaBaseball.com league standings.
Canardlys can thank the heavens for the weather
In horseracing, they call them "mudders". In KonaBaseball.com action Sunday
afternoon, they call them "Canardlys". The unusual, wet and sloppy conditions
appeared to be working to the advantage of the Play-It-Again Drysdales who
seemed to have the game in hand at the point in time where it was declared
a complete game. However, the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys were just getting
started. The Canardlys rallied to take advantage of a fatigued Drysdales pitching
staff who could not find the strike zone as the game progressed. The Mountain Thunder boys
proceeded to score six runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-8 lead just in time for the
skies to open up with rain sufficient for the umpires to call an end to the contest. It was
the Canardlys first win for the season, a game that the Drysdales would rather, well, just play it
again.
J.R. Mori
notched the win while
Tyril Sherman
took his first loss for the Play-It-Again Drysdales.
Blame it on the umpire
In order to give some of the regular umpires Father's Day off, the KonaBaseball.com
league invited guest umpire
Art Tirotta
of Hilo to West Hawaii.
Tirotta,
one of the
officials who (along with KonaBaseball.com ump
Junior Tabieros),
represented the Big
Island in the state high school tournament held recently on Oahu, did a fine job Sunday,
calling balls, strikes, outs, etc. However, it appears as though
Art
also brought rain clouds with him from the windward side, fooling all who had predicted
clear skies for Kona. Despite the soggy conditions, all three men's hardball games
were played.

Week #10 - Sunday, June 27th: Bubba Gumps sweeps Canardlys
Bubba Gumps hands out double lumps
In KonaBaseball.com action, the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide prevailed
twice over the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys, sweeping the double-header. In the
morning contest, the Tide came from behind, tacking on three runs in their last at-bat
to surprise the perhaps over-confident Canardlys by the final score of 9-8.
Chris Arena
recorded his first victory in the 2004 season, while
J.R. Mori
suffered another agonizing defeat on the hill for the Canardlys. The vocal Bubba Gumps
crowd acted as a tenth player, cheering the Tide through their last-inning rally. Credit
Toby Turney
and
Tanny Utrora
with the offensive spark for the victors.
The second game was also quite close, this time featuring a tight defensive battle
between pitchers
C.J. Hanna
of Mountain Thunder Coffee and
Mike Luster
of Bubba Gumps. In the end, however, thanks to aggressive batting and baserunning by
Will "The Thrill" Carr,
it was the Crimson Tide who prevailed, 2-0. In essence, the Bubba Gumps simply played
with a bit more "luster" over the Mountain Thunder Canardlys, who, in the end, seemed
to run out of caffeine in their coffee.
MVP Sports gets even with Drysdales
The 3:00 P.M. game was a grudge match between the MVP Sports (of Waimea) and the
Play-It-Again Drysdales. Recalling MVP Sports' loss to the Drysdales earlier this
season, Sunday afternoon's game was payback time. Sparked by a barrage of offense, led by
Aaron Mori
and new-to-the-team
Sean Fujii,
the MVP Sports squad secured a league-leading fourth victory for
Ikaika Baptista,
9-2.
For the Drysdales, a few offensive highlights were provided by
Tyler Roy
and
"Hammerin" Cameron Smay,
but they were not enough to keep
Morgan Kruger-Burgess
from suffering the loss on the mound.

Week #11 - Sunday, July 4th: KonaBaseball.com has a blast on the 4th of July
Mariners hang the dales out to dry
With fourth place on the line, the Michaelangelos Mariners (last year's champions) stood their
ground Sunday morning against the equally determined Play-it-Again Drysdales. Mariners' ace hurler
Joel "Seldom-Gives-A-Walk" Zwak
recorded the victory. The Drysdales' nemesis turned out to be the fourth inning when five
Mariners crossed the plate to seal the issue, 8-5.
Durty Jakes ain't no fakes
The Durty Jakes Pirates arrived early for the noon game, anxious to avenge their only loss
in 2004, the season opener against MVP Sports. What was anticipated to be a blockbuster
turned out to be a bust when the MVPs failed to field a complete team and were forced to
forfeit the contest, 7-0. The core of the MVP squad (whose players are members of a national
championship softball team) was off island participating in a holiday-weekend softball
tournament on Oahu. Accordingly, a skeleton crew of MVP Sports players recruited a handful
of players from other teams in the KonaBaseball.com league to challenge the Pirates in a
scrimmage. Much to everyone's surprise, the ad hoc "Yankee Doodle Dandies" gave the boys
from Durty Jakes more than a handful. However, in the end, the fancy junk-ball pitches
delivered by
Oscar Delgado
secured the victory for the league-leading Pirates.
Steelers marshal another victory
At 3:00 P.M., Active Steel secured sole possession of second spot in the standings and kept
pace with the Pirates by putting on an old-fashioned batting clinic at the expense of the
Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys. In the first inning, the Steelers scored a whopping seven
runs, giving their star pitcher
Paxton Chatfield
a ton of comfort, allowing him to breeze through the entire game. Defensively,
Alson Kajikawa
once again thrilled the crowd with several all-star catches. Multiple runs were scored
by Active Steel's youth players
Kai Miller
and
Donald Goings,
and by veteran Steeler
John Marshall,
who really punched out the Canardlys' lights with timely, base-clearing hits at the
critical moments in the 15-2 pounding.

Week #12 - Sunday, July 11th: KonaBaseball.com results
MVP Sports forfeits to Steelers
Active Steel, 7
MVP Sports, 0
Mariners take control the Tide
Michaelangelo Mariners, 11
Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide, 4
Pirates tell Drysdales to try it again next year
Durty Jakes Pirates, 18
Play-It-Again Drysdales, 7

Week #13 - Sunday, July 18th: Pirates steal game from Steelers
Sounds like somewhere in Pennsylvania, but it's Hawaii
In KonaBaseball.com action Sunday morning, July 18th, it was a battle between the top
two teams in the league. A pitchers' dual through two frames, the Active Steel Steelers
scored three runs in the third inning, and it looked as though they were taking control
of the Durty Jakes Pirates. However, the Pirates answered back in their next at-bat,
posting four runs of their own on the scoreboard.
Once again, both defenses settled down, with Steelers' hurler
Sky Valenzuela
striking out three consecutive batters and Pirates' junkball pitcher
Oscar "Double-Zero" Delgado
baffling everyone in Active Steel's lineup.
The sixth inning is one that the Steelers would like to forget. Sparked by
Kurtis Hawkins,
Durty Jakes took a commanding 8-run lead by inning's end. Undaunted, the Steelers
began chanting their rally call (a sound that is somewhat like the roar of a "wookie"
from the movie "Star Wars"), and the Active Steel bats, once again, came to life. Four,
back-to-back Steelers hits yielded three runs in their last-inning gasp. But it was
not enough to catch the Pirates who prevailed in the end by the final score of 11-6.
MVP is AWOL again
In the noon game, the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys celebrated a 7-0 victory
over a short-handed MVP Sports team.
KonaBaseball.com takes a week off
The KonaBaseball.com league resumes play on August 1st, yielding Simmons Field on
July 25th to the Gifford/Kanuha Kalae Iki Youth Baseball Clinic (an annual event
featuring top NCAA coaches from UCLA, Stanford, Cal-Berkeley, Santa Clara, San Jose State,
Chico State, the University of Hawaii-Manoa, and the University of Hawaii-Hilo) where
several KonaBaseball.com youth players, coaches and umpires will also participate.

Week #14 - Sunday, August 1st: Pirates washed up in the Tide
Drysdales surprise Steelers, 16-10
The hot-and-cold, Play-It-Again Drysdales' fires were burning Sunday morning, while
the Active Steel Steelers simply could not get their torches lit. It had to be
a heart-breaking loss for
Paxton Chatfield
who pitched well for the Steelers, but
his teammates' fielding let him down. On the other side of the diamond, credit goes to Matt
Buxton who doubled twice, smacked a triple and scored three runs. His fellow Drysdales,
"Hammerin" Cameron Smay
also batted 3-for-4 (crossing home plate thrice), and
Tyril Sherman
homered in the slugfest.
Chris "Hardly-A-Mistake" Drake
picked up the well-deserved win for
the Play-It-Again team.
MVP Sports fall to Mariners
A short-handed MVP Sports team could not get things started in their noon contest
against the Michaelangelos Mariners, suffering its fifth shutout of the year, 7-0. It
could be said that the
Mariners merely took batting practice at the expense of MVP Sports (who were truly out to lunch).
Bubba Gumps wins battle of restaurant row
The Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide sent a message to the Durty Jakes Pirates in the
3:00 P.M. game that the KonaBaseball.com treasure chest is still up for grabs in
the 2004 season. Crimson Tide pitcher
Mike Luster
swabbed the decks of the
Pirates with effective junk balls all afternoon, while teammate
Toby Turney
led the
offensive charge. By game's end, the Tide had sunk the Pirates to the depths of
Davey Jones' locker, 10-3.

Week #15 - Sunday, August 8th: Canardlys can barely, but can do
Active Steel Steelers hammer Michaelangelos Mariners
The Active Steel Steelers secured second place in the final regular season standings
of the KonaBaseball.com league with an impressive victory over the third-place
Michaelangelos Mariners, 12-4. Steelers' pitcher
Paxton Chatfield
picked up the
victory while last season's most valuable player in the league
Joel Zwak
took the loss for
the Michaelangelos Mariners. The lone highlight for the Mariners was an
outstanding catch in the fourth inning by left fielder
John Corbin
to rob
Gavin Fujino
of a would-be double hit into the gap. Perhaps the real hero of the game was
Dr. Alfred R. Valenzuela, D.C.,
who opened his local office to perform
a spur-of-the-moment x-ray on the forearm of umpire
Jim Donovan
who had been hit by a fouled-tipped pitch delivered by fastballer
Joel Zwak.
Fortunately, the x-ray proved to be negative, and the ump returned to the field.
Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys surprise the Durty Jakes Pirates, 3-2
At noon, in a battle of "first" verses "worst", the tables were suddenly turned.
Ryan Landis
lead off the game for the Canardlys with a triple,
Shadow Diessner promptly
singled, then
J. Lidgett
cleared the bases with a double, giving the boys of Mountain Thunder Coffee a quick, two-run lead before
the ink had dried on the lineups in the scorebook. Recovering from the shock, Pirates' pitcher
Eduardo Andrews
settled down, permitting his skull-and-cross-bone teammates to tie the score by the
end of the second inning. In the fourth,
Andrews
fanned
Mike Sofranko,
but the third-strike pitch glanced off the catcher's glove, allowing
Sofranko
to reach first base safely. The Canardlys then turned to a strategy of small ball,
eventually bringing
Sofranko
around to score the go-ahead run. That was all that the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys
needed, as both teams' defenses tightened for the remainder of the contest, executing double plays
and picking off opponent's baserunners.
C.J. Hanna
notched the victory on the mound for the Canardlys, thanks in part, to an
outstanding pitching job in relief by
J.R. Mori
who recorded the save.
A dejected
Oscar Delgado
(co-manager of the Durty Jakes team)
left the diamond shaking his head in disbelief, wondering about the future of his top-ranked
Pirates who ended their regular season and now head into the playoffs after walking the
plank twice in a row at the hands of
the bottom two squads in the KonaBaseball.com league.
MVP Sports dominate Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide
Pete Ewing
and
Cameron Kawai's
bats really came to life in the 3:00 P.M. game, pacing
the MVP Sports to a 12-1 shellacking of the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide.
Kalen Hiraishi
earned the pitching victory for MVP Sports while
Chris Arena
took the loss for the Crimson Tide, ending Bubba Gumps' hopes of
finishing the 2004 regular season at .500.

Week #16 - Sunday, August 15th: Regular season ends, playoffs: next week
See-saw game between Mariners and Canardlys turns out to be a thriller
In a game where the lead changed hands four times, the final score of 15-14 sounds more
like a football clash than a baseball game. Give both teams an "E" for entertainment as the
Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys
made a valiant effort to climb out of the basement at season's end, merely to have the
Michaelangelos Mariners dash those hopes with a pair of dingers sent into the parking lot at
Simmons Field. Hitting out-of-the-park homers is a rare occurrence in Kona's only regulation-NCAA
field because of its near-sea-level elevation. But on Sunday morning, two KonaBaseball.com
hitters
Joel Zwak
(last year's most valuable player in the league and
Adam Tabieros
(the former Konawaena High School star), both of the Mariners, went "yard".
Final game of season important in settling playoff picture
With fifth place on the line in the noon contest, the Play-It-Again Drysdales held off a
stubborn Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide team, who, after yielding thirteen runs in a dreadful second inning,
refused to give up, rallying for five runs of their own in the third and four more in the fourth. In the
end, however, the 'dales washed the 'gumps out with the tide by the final tally of 13-10 (a score
that also sounds like one from the gridiron).
Chris "Hardly-A-Mistake" Drake
notched the pitching victory for
the Drysdales with the save being recorded by
"Hammerin" Cameron Smay.

Week #17 - Sunday, August 22nd: First round of playoffs
Canardlys snuff out Steelers' torch
In typical Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys' fashion, the KonaBaseball.com
basement dwellers took an early-game lead. Everyone in the crowd expected them
to crumble by the end of the contest, an all too regular happenstance for the Mountain
Thunder team.
But Sunday morning was a different day, and the
Canardlys were determined not to let this game get away from them.
Instead, they seemed to
have an angel in their outfield, especially in the fifth inning when right fielder
Rich Youngs
tripped
on his way to fielding a fly ball, only to make a miraculous recovery, securing the catch
while lying flat on his back, then rising to complete a double play at the expense of
a bewildered team of Steelers. That play marked the turning point of the game, as the
highly-favored Active Steel Steelers simply could not rekindle their flame, eventually falling
to Mountain Thunder Coffee by the final score of 4-2.
Ryan Landis
led the scoring for the
Canardlys, insuring the pitching victory for
J. Lidgett,
while
J.R. Mori
recorded the save.
Mariners washed out with the Tide
Underdogs continued to prevail in the noon game as the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide
showed up in full force, notching a 7-0 victory over
a faltering team of Michaelangelos Mariners. The Tide's
Eric Simbeck
put on a
batting exhibition, crossing home plate three times.
MVP rises above Drysdales
After a pair of upsets in the earlier games, the MVP Sports vowed not to let the entire
first round of the KonaBaseball.com league playoffs go topsy-turvy. The Play-It-Again
Drysdales had their share of opportunities, but a handful of
error-ridden moments proved to be costly for the 'dales. On the other side of the diamond,
MVP Sports' winning pitcher
Kalen Hiraishi
and reliever
Cameron Kawai
teamed up to outshine all players on the field, both defensively and offensively,
with each hurler scoring twice
in the 9-5 MVP victory.

Week #18 - Sunday, August 29th: First elimination from playoffs
Last year's champs are out
Surprisingly, the 2003 KonaBaseball.com champions, the Michaelangelos Mariners, are the
first team to be eliminated in this year's playoffs. Coming off a strong 12-3 season last year,
the Mariners may have underestimated the improvement throughout the league in 2004,
the team finishing
third in the regular season, then promptly losing twice in the playoffs.
Earlier this year, the Mariners opted out of the April draft of free-agent players,
only to have that decision come back to haunt them by mid-season. However,
the team still consists of a core of fine athletes who will be recruiting players
during the off season to bolster their roster for 2005.
Pirates scuttle Canardlys
Last-place finishers in the regular season, the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys,
are letting it be known throughout the KonaBaseball.com league that they are a team
not to be taken lightly. At noon Sunday, they took on the top
seed, Durty Jakes Pirates, in a game that was almost more than the Pirates could handle.
The Canardlys jumped out to an early one-run lead when
Ryan Landis
scored the first of his three runs in the contest, but the Canardlys could not stop the speedy
Pirates from playing their own brand of small ball. The skull-and-crossbones
squeezed out one run per inning through the middle of the contest while their junkball
hurler
Gerardo Ibarra
kept the Mountain Thunder Coffee batters at bay.
In the last two frames, the never-say-die Canardlys mounted rallies, but in the end, they
were still one run short in their quest to knock Durty Jakes out of the winners' bracket in
the playoffs. Pirates' fastballer
Eduardo Andrews
came on in relief to preserve the 5-4 victory for
Ibarra,
while
J. Lidgett
took
the defeat on the mound for the Canardlys.
For a team that has finished in last place in each of the past two seasons, the Canardlys have been
competitive in almost every game, losing by only one run in almost 90% of their
losses, and suffering a blowout loss only once this year.
MVP Sports' heads in the clouds
Perhaps trying to accomplish too much over the weekend, Coach
Benny Alcoran
and the
majority of the MVP Sports' players traveled
to Oahu for a softball tournament (a variation of the true game of baseball) in
which their "Shut D" team is among the nation's finest.
Unfortunately, "Benny and the jets" found themselves unable to get back home to the Big Island
in time for their 3:00 P.M. hardball game, stuck in the Honolulu airport lobby awaiting
the next flight.
Accordingly, the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide again advanced without having to throw one pitch or
sending one runner across home plate, waltzing its way into the semi-final game in the winners' bracket.

Week #19 - Sunday, September 5th: second round of playoffs
MVP is o-u-t
The last-place finishers in the regular season Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys
have now made it to the final four in the KonaBaseball.com playoffs, thanks
to a forfeit by the MVP Sports Sunday morning. The second consecutive forfeit by MVP eliminates
them from the 2004 season playoffs and puts that
team in jeopardy of league sanctions being imposed for 2005.
Steelers maul Drysdales
The Active Steel Steelers earned their ticket to the final four Sunday
afternoon with
a 10-2 hammering of the Play-It-Again Drysdales. The 'dales took an early
lead, only to unravel in the third inning. From that point forward, the Steelers
never looked back and went on to put the game away in the sixth inning.
The Steelers' style of play in this game exemplified the multi-generational
structure of the KonaBaseball.com league. In addition to valuable contributions being
made by
their youth players (many of whom comprise the core of the Kealakehe
High School team), this time, the Steelers also found heroes among their veterans.
Seasoned player
Ray Uribes
(2 for 3 on the afternoon) sparked the third-inning rally, then came around
to score the go-ahead run, securing the pitching victory for
Sky Valenzuela.
In the sixth inning,
Sky's
father
Al Valenzuela
broke the game open with a solid double to the left-field
gap, sending youth player
Kai Miller
across home plate for his third score of the day.
The senior
Valenzuela
also came around to score in an inning that
was capped off by
Bryant Komo's
base-clearing triple, providing frosting on the cake for Active Steel.
For the Play-It-Again Drysdales, highlights were provided by
third baseman
Gabe Aispuro, who
showed no signs of his recent back injury, smashing three hits, including
a triple. Unfortunately, the rest of the Drysdales could not muster enough
offense to keep pitcher
Chris "Hardly-A-Mistake" Drake
from suffering the loss. Accordingly, the Drysdales have now been
eliminated from the KonaBaseball.com playoffs and can only
look to the 2005 baseball season to play it again.

Week #20 - Sunday, September 12th: Playoffs continue
Pirates advance to championship game
Well, the tide has most certainly been rising in the latter part of this year's KonaBaseball.com season ... the
Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide, that is. After a sluggish start, the Crimson Tide team turned
things around mid-season and advanced to a third-round game in the winners' bracket of the
playoffs. However, top-seed Durty Jakes Pirates let the Tide know Sunday morning
that the team of the skull-and-crossbones is the team that controls the high seas here in
Kona. On the other hand, the Crimson Tide
gave the Pirates more than a treasure chest full of action before
finally walking the plank at game's end.
In the top of the first inning, the Crimson Tide swabbed the Pirates' decks with four runs,
followed by
two more in the second frame to grab a handy, 6-zip lead (a pair of plate crossings by
Atlee Riddle).
The Bubba Gumps' batters were jumping
all over normally-effective junkball pitcher
Oscar Delgado
of the Pirates. This prompted the
Durty Jakes to turn to their bullpen, where they called upon
Eduardo Andrews
(former professional
pitcher in the Puerto Rican league) to cool down the red-hot Tide.
Across the diamond, Bubba Gumps' undefeated ace hurler
Mike Luster
continued to pitch
out of jams in just about every inning, averting major damage, but letting the small-ball Pirates
nibble away at their opponents' lead. Finally, in the Pirates' last at-bat, after
Adrian Villanueva
drew a lead-off walk,
Jorge Perez
smacked a triple to tie the contest, then came around to score the winning run on a 2-out
base hit delivered by
Leo Perez
(no relation to teammate
Jorge Perez).
As can be imagined, the Pirates' bench went wild with the 7-6 victory, which hoisted them into the league championship
game on September 26th. Conversely, the dejected and bewildered Bubba Gumps' players
left Simmons Field
shaking their heads in disbelief. All is not lost however for the Crimson Tide, as it can still
reign supreme in 2004,
but first must prevail in the qualifying-final game to be played this Sunday, August 19th.
Steelers eliminate Canardlys
Remembering how the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys had surprised the Active Steel Steelers in the first
round of the playoffs, the mighty Steelers were not about
to let the last-place finishers from the regular season eliminate the men of steel altogether here
in 2004.
As for the Canardlys, they knew that, on any given day, they have the ability to play up to the
standard of their more-favored opponents, if and only if the Canardlys avoid a crash-and-burn
inning. But, in typical Canardlys' fashion, one inning turned out to spell their downfall. This
time, Sunday afternoon's
fourth inning proved to be their Nemesis. Up to that point, Canardlys'
starting pitcher
C.J. Hanna
had kept his team close, but a barrage of
base hits by the Steelers in frame number four resulted in five runs, to open
up a 7-0 lead. Relief pitcher
J.R. Mori
was able to stop the bleeding, and the Canardlys rallied
late in the contest, but the recovery was not enough to overcome the deficit.
For the Steelers, the offensive punch was provided mainly by the bottom of their
batting order, everyone getting in on the action. Defensively, credit goes to
Sky Valenzuela
who pitched a shutout through four innings, then ran into a little bit of trouble in the fifth.
Fortunately for the Steelers,
Paxton Chatfield
was available to come on in relief, and the
early-game margin was enough to stave off the "yes we can" Canardlys' threat.
The 8-4 loss eliminates the popular Canardlys' team from the 2004 KonaBaseball.com league
playoffs, but has earned the Mountain Thunder Coffee Canardlys a fourth place finish, their highest in several
seasons.

Week #21 - Sunday, September 19th: Semi-Final Playoff Game
Steelers get sweet revenge
In the movies, Forrest's mother told him that life is like a box of chocolates. In
the KonaBaseball.com league playoffs Sunday morning, the Active Steel Steelers ran off with all of
the candy, leaving the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide with only a memory of the semi-sweet taste of
the 2004 season.
The Steelers wasted no time getting started. They jumped out to a 7-1 lead by the
end of the second inning
at the expense of the Crimson Tide's pitcher
Mike Luster.
All the while, Steelers' hurler
Sky Valenzuela
continued his winning ways, mowing down the hitters
from top to bottom of the Bubba Gumps' batting order.
As expected, the Bubba Gumps Crimson Tide was not about to give up without a fight, sparking
a rally of its own in the fourth inning to close the gap to 7-4.
However, when a team as
strong as the Steelers takes an early-game lead, it is very hard to catch up. By the end of
the fifth
inning, the men from Active Steel stamped an exclamation point on the scoreboard,
running out winners by the final score of 15-5 and washing the Bubba Gumps' team out
with the tide. Leading scorers for the Steelers included
Alson Kajikawa
and
Bryant Komo.
As for the Bubba Gumps' box of chocolates, there simply is no almond joy. For on this day,
it was Active Steel satisfying its
own sweet tooth. And in the end, it was like taking candy from a baby. Oh, Henry!
KonaBaseball.com championship game - Sunday, September 26th
The Steelers' victory hoists them into the
championship game scheduled for 10:00 A.M. this Sunday, September 26th, against the Durty Jakes Pirates.
So, after some wild and crazy turns of events in this year's playoffs, the final game
features the top-seeded team hosting the second-place finishers from the regular season.
Now
that the dust has settled, it will be the Steelers verses the Pirates. It may sound
like a game to be held in Pittsburgh, but you can watch the live action right here in Kailua-Kona.
All KonaBaseball.com games are played at Simmons Field, behind Kekuaokalani Gymnasium, in
the Old Airport sports complex. Admission is free, so come on down to the field and
enjoy one of Kona's favorite entertainment values for residents and visitors alike.

Week #22 - Sunday, September 26th: Championship Game
Steelers are 2004 KonaBaseball.com League Champs
Steelers' 9th inning rally sparks come-from-behind victory
Sunday morning's game between the Durty Jakes Pirates and the Active Steel Steelers
was everything that could be expected of a championship game ... and more.
Luis Ibarra
doubled to lead off the game for the Pirates and came around to score the first
run, setting the stage for what appeared to be a slugfest in the making. However, Active Steel
pitcher
Sky Valenzuela
promptly settled down, and the Kealakehe High School star kept his
Steelers in the game. For the Durty
Jakes Pirates (first-place finishers in the regular season), former professional hurler
Eduardo Andrews
was also up to the task (striking out 11 batters throughout the game), and an
outstanding pitchers' dual ensued.
In the top of the third inning, Active Steel's
Donald Goings
drew a walk and scored the tying run on a triple smacked by
Bryant Komo.
The Steelers went on to take the lead in the fifth inning when
Alson Kajikawa
came home on
Neil McKay's
base hit.
The Pirates immediately answered in the bottom half of the fifth, thanks to
Luis Ibarra's
second double of the game and carbon-copy plate crossing. The skull-and-crossbones
proceeded to put their noses in front of the Steelers again in the seventh inning
when Durty Jakes' pitcher
Edwardo Andrews
helped his own cause with a single, a stolen base, and a run scored upon
Adrian Villanueva's
solid double.
By this time, the noon-day sun had begun to take its toll on both pitchers. This prompted
the Steelers to turn to their bullpen where they called upon
Paxton Chatfield
to take the mound.
Across the diamond, the Pirates opted to remain with their starter, a decision that would
eventually spell their demise.
Andrews
had been highly effective up to that point, and after retiring the Steelers in the eighth inning,
all that the Pirates needed to do, in order to secure a 3-2 victory, was for
Andrews
to retire the bottom of Active Steel's batting order in the ninth and final frame.
Well, according to baseball legend Yogi Berra, "It ain't over until it's over", and
that is exactly what the Steelers were thinking when they donned their helmets for
their final at-bat.
Surprisingly, the first three batters all reached base safely, the bases were loaded
with nobody out, and the
Pirates were definitely in trouble.
The suddenly fired-up Steelers were not to be denied as they scored five runs to take a handy
lead.
Fastball pitcher
Jorge Perez
relieved
Andrews
and cooled down Active Steel's torch, but the damage had already been done.
Determined not to let the lead change hands for a fifth time,
Chatfield
and his Steelers
shut down the Durty Jakes Pirates 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning to notch the 7-3
victory, and the celebration began for the Active Steel Steelers, 2004 KonaBaseball.com
League Champions.
Week #23 - Sunday, October 3rd: Presentation of Awards
Long-ball derby is a smash
The KonaBaseball.com league's season came to an end on Sunday with the presentation of tropies
for 2004. That ceremony immediately
followed the annual baseball skills contests (consisting of a pitch-thru-tire event,
a catchers' drill, and the long-ball derby).
In the opening contest, Canardlys' right-hander
Nate Ching
claimed the award for most accurate pitching through a tire mounted on a concrete
block, a throwback to the childhood of Cleveland Indian great Bob Feller, repudiated
as the one who first used that method to develop his pitching arm.
The second contest of the morning, designed to test a catcher's ability to throw
out a base runner who is attempting to steal second base, was captured by
fellow Canardly player
Ryan Landis.
In the third contest, the ever-popular long-ball derby,
Benny Alcoran
of the MVP Sports team took the prize with nine long-ball hits in the first round and
eleven more in the finals. However, the real thrill of the day was
the eighteen-count long-ball performance in the first round by fellow teammate
Ray Estrella,
including three out-of-the park homers over the center field
fence. Those feats are particularly impressive at Simmons Field where
the elevation is only a few feet above sea level.
At noon, all fans and players in attendance enjoyed cake while
the KonaBaseball.com trophies were bestowed upon
the league champions: the Active Steel Steelers (accepted by
Ray Uribes)
and the first-place finishers in the regular season:
the Durty Jakes Pirates (accepted by
Edwardo Andrews).
Eduardo Andrews
also accepted the individual trophy for his achievement as
2004's most valuable player in the KonaBaseball.com league, and the top pitcher
award for the season was won by
Leo Perez,
fellow teammate from the Pirates.
Individual teams' most valuable players were as follows:
Sky Valenzuela (Steelers),
Gabe Harris (Mariners),
Kalen Hiraishi (MVP Sports),
Chris Drake (Drysdales),
Eric Simbeck (Crimson Tide), and
Ryan Landis (Canardlys).
Special awards were announced for the most improved player in the
league
(John Marshall
of the Steelers) and for the best umpire
(Roman Kowalski).
In addition to medallions, the three victors of the
morning baseball skills contests received
bags of pure Kona coffee (courtesy of Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation International, Inc.)
and generous gift certificates (courtesy of Durty Jakes Restaurant).
Now, the KonaBaseball.com league turns its attention to the Ironman Triathlon where
scorekeeper
Katherine Donovan
will be competing on October 16th. Following that event, several local players and an umpire
are off to the Men's Senior World Series in Phoenix, beginning
October 24th. KonaBaseball.com action will resume with free-agent tryouts in early 2005. Interested
individuals are encouraged to register right here on the KonaBaseball.com web site.
